Open the side cover of the lever housing by removing the two or three stainless screws that hold the casing. Inside the assembly, locate the bundled conductors routed along the shift lever bracket. These leads usually terminate at bullet connectors or small spade terminals connected to the ignition interrupt switch and trim actuator buttons.
Detach each connector gently using needle-nose pliers while supporting the terminal to avoid pulling the copper strands from the insulation. The harness typically runs through a rubber grommet at the rear of the console; press the grommet inward and slide the cable bundle out of the mounting opening without twisting it.
