Connect the key switch terminals to the starter relay, safety switches, and power supply exactly as specified by the manufacturer layout. The typical configuration uses five posts labeled B, S, M, G, and L. The B terminal receives constant 12-volt supply from the mower battery, while the S terminal routes power to the starter solenoid when the key turns to the start position.

Route the ground and magneto stop lead through the M terminal of the key switch. When the key rotates to the OFF position, this terminal connects the magneto lead to ground, stopping spark generation in the engine. Incorrect placement of this wire can prevent the engine from shutting down or cause a no-spark condition.

The starter control path normally passes through several safety interlock switches before reaching the solenoid. These include the seat switch, brake switch, and blade engagement switch. If any of these switches remain open, current cannot reach the solenoid coil, preventing the starter motor from activating.

Use a multimeter set to continuity mode to confirm each connection path. Measure between the key switch posts while rotating the key through OFF, RUN, and START positions. The correct internal contacts close only in specific positions, allowing power to flow through the correct terminals during engine start and operation.

Connect the key switch B terminal directly to the positive supply from the mower power source through a fused lead. This post provides constant 12-volt input for the starting system. The S terminal routes voltage to the starter solenoid coil only when the key rotates to the START position.

The starter solenoid control line runs from the S terminal through several safety switches before reaching the relay coil. These switches interrupt the path whenever operating conditions are unsafe.

Typical interlock chain used on this mower platform includes:

Seat switch – opens when the operator leaves the seat

Brake pedal switch – closes only when the pedal is fully pressed

PTO engagement switch – opens if blades remain engaged

If any switch in this chain stays open, current cannot energize the starter relay coil. The result is a no-crank condition even though the key switch receives proper voltage.

Key Switch Terminal Functions

The multi-terminal switch normally includes five posts marked B, S, M, L, and G. Each performs a different task during engine start and shutdown.

B receives constant supply voltage. S sends power to the starter solenoid during cranking. M connects to the engine magneto stop lead. When the key turns to OFF, this post grounds the magneto wire and halts spark production.

The L terminal powers accessories such as panel lights when the key sits in the RUN position. The G terminal provides chassis ground used by the stop circuit. Correct placement of these connections keeps the starting system, shutdown function, and safety switches operating properly.

Identify each key switch terminal before connecting harness leads. The switch typically uses five posts marked B, S, M, L, and G. Each post links to a specific conductor color within the mower harness.

  • B terminal – red supply lead from the mower power source
  • S terminal – white or white with stripe lead going to the starter solenoid trigger
  • M terminal – black lead connected to the engine magneto stop line
  • L terminal – yellow or orange conductor feeding panel accessories and indicator lamps
  • G terminal – chassis ground lead typically black with a ring connector

Verify these connections with a multimeter before final assembly. With the key turned to START, continuity should appear between the B and S posts. In the OFF position, the M terminal connects to ground, stopping spark production at the engine magneto.
